What Teens Want: Exploring YA Fiction

Time: 11:30 AM (75 min session)
Location: Reception Gallery

Panel Discussion

Young adult (YA) books are the fastest-growing literature category in the U.S., with print sales jumping by a whopping 48% since 2018. Unfortunately, for many authors our teen years are a long way behind us. With rapidly developing technology and ever-changing social norms today’s teens face and entirely new post-pandemic reality. From characters to plot, this panel features local teens who will discuss what they are looking for in YA novels.

Crowdfunding for Authors and Artists

Time: 1:00 PM (75 min session)
Location: Reception Gallery

From editing to cover art, the act of publishing can be expensive. Crowdfunding allows authors and artist to receive start-up money from supporters before the book is published. This workshop will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of launching a Kickstarter campaign, provide the information necessary to evaluate if crowdfunding is right for them, and walk artists and authors through the steps necessary to launch a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Accessibility and Inclusion for Deaf Authors: what can be learned from hearing their unique voices.

Time: 2:30 pm (75 min session)
Location: Reception Gallery

The world of Deaf people involves a unique culture and language. Often people question whether Deaf culture is categorized as a minority group. Within the writing and publishing world, it is important to consider this question when determining how the stories that Deaf authors write fit into the categories of unheard voices, minority cultures, marginalized communities, and diverse languages. This presentation will expose participants to an experience of what it is like for a Deaf author to be engaged in conversations with other writers who do not know sign language. From that experience, participants will learn what they can “hear” from the unique “voices” of Deaf authors.

Drawing from his career as a teacher, leader and advocate within and for the Deaf community, Peter M. Quint writes novels about Deaf characters facing life challenges which shake their foundations and beliefs. Outside fiction, he enjoys household building projects and fitness activities, such as running and biking. He and his wife Pratibha live in Spokane, Washington, and love exploring the beautiful woods near their home with their Deaf dog Asha.
